| How to Volunteer
|
The process to volunteer is simple: (1) Please complete our online application form, or call and we would be glad to mail an application to you. (2) Schedule and attend a volunteer orientation. While at orientation, you will also complete a background check form. (3) Schedule a time to come in and volunteer. The volunteer department can work this out with you over the phone, by email or in person. Construction sites are open Tuesday - Saturday from 8 am until about 3 pm. Office hours are Tuesday - Saturday 8 am - 4:30 pm.
There are many things that volunteers do with our organization every day, but most volunteers work on our construction projects. There is a federal requirement that all construction volunteers be at least 16 years old. Please see our Volunteer Opportunities page for more about the positions available for those over 16 years old.
Opportunities for Volunteers Under 16 1. Put together a “Construction Care Kit”: Youth can collect new and used tools to help replenish Habitat’s supplies. Collected items can be brought to the Habitat office. Items can include hammers, tape measures, utility knives, carpenter pencils, garbage bags, coffee, etc.
2. Make a meal: Cook or put together a lunch for worksite volunteers. This can involve young volunteers in the fun and energy of the construction site.
3. Provide morning or afternoon snacks: Provide snacks for worksite volunteers.
4. Fund-raising: Volunteers of all ages are needed for our fundraising efforts. Some specific ideas include: holding a bake sale, garage sale, silent auction, car wash, walk-a-thon, etc. For more fund-raising ideas contact our Development Department.
5. Collect recyclables: Cans for Habitat recycles aluminum cans here at our office. We also have a bin to recycle newspaper, magazines, paperboard, and mail. All recyclables earn money to help us build houses.
6. Build planters or other simple carpentry items: Groups are encouraged to build and fill flower planters, and present them to the homeowner family during the house blessing ceremony. In this way the young volunteers can do something significant for the homeowner family.
7. Create Greeting Cards for homeowners, donors and volunteers.
